What Is The WMF World Cup

In November 2013 it was announced by Kevin Millican, commissioner of the Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) that a World Cup of indoor soccer would be coming to the United States in 2015. The event would be the first of its kind for the sport, bringing together the top international indoor soccer nations together to crown a world champion.

Since that announcement very little has been said about the upcoming tournament, tentatively scheduled for March 20-29, 2015 to be played at several sites across the country. The World Minifootball Federation (WMF), governing body of the sport, has ZERO mention of the tournament on their website. Most of the ‘news’ section of the site features articles on the upcoming miniEURO 2014 tournament scheduled for November 23-27 in Israel. One headline reads, “We Will Be Heard To Beat Says England Skipper Long” so apparently the WMF do not have an editor for the website as well.

A glance at the Confederación Panamericana de Minifutbol (CPM), the regional governing body for North and South America, also lacks any mention of the WMF World Cup. With only five months remaining to prepare for the inaugural event, the host federation does not seem to have a media team.

So what do we know about this event?

  • The initial announcement named San Diego Sockers head coach Phil Salvagio to lead the USA National Indoor Team.
  • Host cities include: Dallas, Ontario, San Diego and Wichita.
  • The Mexico coaching staff is led by Rene Ortiz, also the Futsal National Team Head Coach. Ortiz played for several seasons in San Diego and for the Milwaukee Wave.
  • Armando Gamboa of the Chicago Mustangs is also among the Mexico coaching staff.
  • The Mexican team has several friendlies scheduled next month against MASL clubs.sockers preseason poster
